A Real Hero

Standard

Spends years in jail because he is fighting for the rights of all his people. A real hero goes into a burning building to save lives. They do things for the world and get little fanfare. Heroes sometimes aren’t in an animated gif on a blogging site. It’s a teacher in a school that many don’t want to be assigned to. That cop walking a beat to keep you safe at night. A real hero is the person in your neighborhood who helps you in a pinch. Rarely do heroes wear capes.

Just reflecting on what a real hero is.

A Word About President Mandela

Standard

In reading his quotes and knowing about his life Nelson Mandela was a true leader, statesman and champion for human rights. His life was about creating an equal playing field for everyone in South Africa. One thing about him, he wanted to give rights to the oppressed without taking rights from those who enjoyed them for decades. Mr. Mandela leaves behind a legacy that we should all want to follow. It’s the right thing to set a table for everyone to enjoy all of what God has provided his children.

In college I knew a man named Kelvin who was from South Africa and he exposed me to Mandela and the African National Congress. It’s that time spent with Kelvin that I grew to understand what it means to bring down systems that oppress people, takes away their basic human needs and to enslave them. I believe the way I do in a small way because Nelson Mandela fought the good fight.
