What’s In A Name

Standard

There comes a time in life when people you used to call them by their last name you now call by their first name. For years I always called adults I knew as a child by Mr. or Mrs. and now I call some of them by their first name. This is especially strange when its a former teacher or perhaps that couple across the street who’s kids you played with growing up.

It’s weird to change your routine in how you address someone. However its a sign one has grown up and enjoys the privileges of adulthood. There are some folks I still call Mr. or Mrs. because I cannot bring myself to do otherwise.

Really this is about respecting people where they are in relation to where you are. I guess it’s something I am still old fashioned about. Older folks have earned respect and I believe its good to observe that. Now there are some people who aren’t easy to get along with but it says a lot about us if we continue to offer respect when it hasn’t been earned. So what’s in a name…more than you think.

Age Is Just A Number

Standard

There is a time in life where age is just a number. However we live in a society that reveres youth and older folks seem to be lame and boring. Well my friends Peter Capaldi the new “Doctor” on “Doctor Who” is 55 years old and is the second oldest person to play the role. Its pretty remarkable that they chose to go older in the role considering the relative youth of David Tennant and Matt Smith.

As for me I am in my 40’s and getting older isn’t a big deal. Older people can chose to be stuffy or perhaps it would be good to relate to younger folks. However you don’t want someone my age going to a frat party or trying to fit in and making a fool of themselves.

Blogging has provided me the opportunity to get to know younger folks who are smart and mature. These folks also are creating the cultural environment we are seeing today. All the things happening now aren’t the invention of people my age but those who have new ideas and possess the energy to implement their creativity.

I might be twice as old as some of my followers but you know that’s cool. They can learn from me and I can learn from them.

Think then Speak

Standard

Today I was reminded that I should think, then speak. Sometimes I get carried away and kid around too much. Joking about folks problems even in a well meaning way can be hurtful. I would like to think I am a nice guy but I am a human being and there are moments when I make mistakes by speaking too much. Often times its best not to say anything. God, forgive me when I hurt others, help me be a better person for my family and the world.
