I was born on a few weeks later and the moonshot was the big story of the year. Astronauts are true heroes!
July 20, 1969: First Man Walks on the Moon
On this day in 1969, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon aboard the spaceflight Apollo 11. An estimated 600 million people, one-fifth of the world’s population at the time, watched or listened as Neil Armstrong took that momentous first step onto the moon. There he famously declared, “This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Relive this historic moment with PBS NEWSHOUR’s piece on Neil Armstrong.

Neil Armstrong, First Man On The Moon, Rest In Peace…. I have always been a great fan of the space program. Men went to the moon in July of 1969, just a few weeks before I was born which was cool. This was a lord of space in his own time. He has put his stamp on the universe by the lunar landing of Apollo 11. God bless his family during this time. Thank you sir for your service to our country and inspiring millions.
